Under the Willow Branches
The air feels dense as you moved through it. It is heavy. Not heavy in the sense that wind carries dirt into my mouth and eyes, but this weight, this weight is harder to explain. A weight that only physical presence can comprehend.
The presence of suffering forces a community to gather. For the end of suffering marks the beginning of chance. A rare time where decision can be made with a clear head.
The presence of suffering, instead of bitterness, brings positivity and stories. Hard times looked back on with wide smiles. These stories do not come naturally through conversation; they are asked for. A closed mouth does not get fed, just as a hearing does not mean listening. There is intent. These stories are told after they are asked for. And when they are, everyone listens. The most productive way to learn about life, and an individual, through genuine interest.
As the suffering ends, a voice echos, "Take these blessings, and take them far."
I sit alone, for I don't know where to go even if I started walking. The air sits still and clean around me, clinging to my breath upon each inhale. Happy new year.
