If I Were President of the US

As we all know, the US is a great country and everyone lucky enough to live there knows it. I'm not saying we don't have our problems, cause the world knows we have plenty. But I am proud to be a US citizen and I'll say that with my chest.

But in the past years, it has been harder and harder for me to show my patriotism. Especially after living abroad for some time, I have caught myself answering the question of: "where are you from?" with a bit of embarrassment. I can live with clownish presidents and tolerate the overcommitment most Americans have for their chosen political party. Though, racism, classim, sexism, etc. are definitely problems we NEED to prioritize; the most destructive and horrid issue we have as a country, is that each day we send our children - the most innocent and undeserving of all - into potential slaughterhouses. All while the "adults" say they give a fuck and then continue to do nothing to resolve this issue.

Let me preface by saying I refuse to take a side on whether this is a gun problem or mental health problem. In my opinion, I think the debate serves as something of a distraction. Acting like we have made advancements on something that has literally had zero progress since its first occurrence. No, I don't have all the answers. I don't even know all of the questions. But I do know we have problemS. More than one or the other; a mix of them all.

Yet, no one is willing to temporarily put their ego aside. Or make any accommodations to a solution other than their own. Even if it means avoiding a 9 year old little girl from getting shot into between her two weeping, brown eyes. Leaving a mess in the back of her head that the remaining survivors will wear for the rest of the day, and a memory they will suffer the rest of their lives.

If I was president for some time. The first thing I would do in office, is nothing. I wouldn't sign a paper, take a phone call, or listen to a peer, unless any of the following is a step taken to insure the safety and security of our children. And I would continue this until there are visible results.

I am not educated enough on the topic of government to tell you what would happen if the president refused to work; but I am confident it would cause a type of destruction and commotion. Potentially speeding up the process of ensuring the welfare of our children (if that was the goal). A subject which seems to be taken with an almost inhuman amount of relaxation and patience.

It's crazy to me that this has become normal. I am no longer surprised to hear about dead kids in school hallways. Only toren. My heart aches and my teeth clinch. Knowing another is close.

The true character in a society is revealed in how it treats its children. - Nelson Mandela
