I had a conversation with a couple of ladies I was serving the other day. They were both very religious, and vocal about that. Though I am more spiritual, not following any particular religion, we agreed on multiple topics. She asked “me what I believe the purpose of religion is?”
To which I answered that “the purpose of religion is to build good character. For example, don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t kill.”
“Teach people how you want to be treated,” she added on.
“Exactly.”
I believe most religious, and nonreligious, people would agree with this: at the foundation of all major religions, are instructions on how to be a good person. The details may differ, but the purpose is the same.
What is ironic, is the amount of wars humans have gotten in, with religion fueling their rage. I am going to assume that murder under any circumstance is a sin in most major religions - and rightfully so. So why would we kill in the name of our God? Would this God appreciate your loyalty at the cost of someone’s life? I’m not sure. But hopefully not.
