I’ve been talking a lot about problems and how we solve them. Particularly, big problems. Humans are very problematic. We seem to make problems for ourselves, just to solve them later. But when we solve these problems, we try to conjure up these big solutions. Not only is that implausible, it doesn’t end up solving the problem. For our problems are very complex, and demand a lot of smaller solutions.
A good example of this would be the United States’ problem with gun violence. There is a lot of debate over whether we should ban guns for safety or keep guns for safety. But that is when the problem has already had time to develop. Now the issue has shifted to what we should do with guns, rather than why people are using them poorly.
I believe our natural tendency to unite with like minded groups gives us a comfort that is undeniably real and important. But at the same time, it can be blinding. I myself am blinded by my peers and am insulted by my foes. I’m trying to listen to both, though. The idea is not to be right or wrong, it is to understand… and hopefully we can go from there.
